Porto - The city that stole our hearts
The Luis I bridge spanning over the Douro River looking onto Porto's historic downtown.
When visiting Portugal, a stop in Porto is a must. As the country’s second-largest city and the home of the world-famous Port wine, visitors will find no shortage of ways to explore its heritage and charm. We fell in love with Porto in 2023, spending nearly six weeks immersed in its beauty as part of a three-month journey throughout the country. The city captivated us so profoundly that we decided to call it home the following year. Even now, as we continue exploring, we are constantly amazed. Porto’s charm is matched only by its incredible food, wine, and the many distinctive ways to experience its storied past.
If you’re planning a visit to Porto, here are some of our favorite recommendations to ensure your trip is unforgettable.
SIGHTSEEING
Strolling through the Mercado do Bolhao while sipping wine.
We find that one of the best ways to explore any city, Porto included, is by TukTuk. These guided tours cover major sights in just a few hours, helping you prioritize must-visit spots. If you prefer to venture out on your own, be sure to check out these locations:
A storied open-air market offering fresh fruits, meats, cheeses, and other local delicacies. On weekends, live music adds to the lively atmosphere. Stop by a kiosk, grab a glass of wine, and savor the experience.
Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves
A stunning contemporary art museum featuring immersive exhibits and expansive gardens that are just as breathtaking as the art inside.
Often considered one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores, this architectural gem is rumored to have inspired J.K. Rowling while she lived in Porto. Opt for the €50 ticket for priority access and a visit to the exclusive Gemma Room, which houses rare books and manuscripts.
Explore the WOW (World of Wine) Arts District
Situated on the Gaia side of the Douro River, WOW is a lively cultural district filled with museums, shops, wine experiences, and fantastic dining. Whether wandering through its charming streets or indulging in tastings at the smaller Port houses, WOW offers a delightful way to spend an afternoon.
EXPERIENCES
Painting a traditional pattern on Portuguese ceramic tiles.
Porto is a city that offers a rich blend of cultural heritage, artistic expression, and immersive activities that make every visit distinctive. Whether you’re indulging in the city’s soulful music, engaging in hands-on art experiences, or exploring its lively districts, there’s something here to captivate every traveler. Here are some of our favorite ways to experience Porto beyond the typical sightseeing.
Traditional Portuguese Tile Painting Workshop
Portugal’s beautifully painted ceramic tiles adorn countless buildings, creating stunning facades that are individual works of art. A fun way to learn about the heritage of Portuguese tiles—and create a keepsake—is by joining a tile painting workshop. We love the experience at Domus Arte, located on the charming Rua da Bainharia. This hands-on activity is a perfect way to appreciate the craftsmanship behind these iconic designs.
Fado is the traditional music of Portugal, and experiencing it live was one of our most memorable moments. A Casa do Fado offers intimate settings, where passionate performances bring the music’s heritage to life. A glass of Port is included, and while the space is cozy (read: packed in tight), the experience is absolutely worth it.
WINE TASTINGS
Kris and Victor in the ball pit at Pink Palace in WOW.
While Porto is famous for its Port wine, the wines themselves are produced in the Douro Valley and then transported to the city’s Port Houses for aging and export. If you don’t have time to visit the Douro Valley, cross the river to Vila Nova de Gaia and explore some of Porto’s best tasting experiences.
This immersive, fun, and playful wine experience at WOW showcases the diversity of rosé wines while providing plenty of Instagram-worthy moments.
This storied building with a modern twist features a tasting room, restaurant, and rooftop lounge. We love trying different Port pairings and relaxing on the rooftop with stunning river views.
A family-owned Port producer offering a more intimate tasting experience, complete with a guided tour. Their smaller batches of Port reflect their dedication to quality and tradition.
DINING + COOL SPOTS FOR SUNSETS & DRINKS
BASE in Porto, a great spot for a Sunset Vibe.
Porto’s food scene is as rich as its heritage. From traditional Portuguese flavors to international cuisine, there’s something for every palate. We recommend using The Fork app to find and reserve tables, as dining out often requires reservations. Here are three of our favorites:
Tapas are the perfect way to sample a variety of Portuguese flavors. This cozy spot offers creative small plates bursting with flavor.
A vegetarian restaurant that even meat lovers will adore. Their Korean Fried Cauliflower and chestnut dumplings are must-tries.
A fine dining experience with breathtaking river views and expertly paired wines.
As the sun sets over Porto, the city transforms into a magical landscape of warm golden hues and shimmering river reflections. Whether you’re in the mood for a lively park atmosphere, a scenic viewpoint, or a trendy rooftop bar, there’s no better way to wrap up your day than with a drink in hand and a stunning view before you. Here are a couple of our favorite sunset spots for a magical end to the day, check out these scenic:
Jardim do Morro
A lively park with stunning sunset views overlooking the Douro River. Arrive early—it gets crowded with locals and tourists enjoying the street musicians and vendors.
A rooftop park next to the Clerigos Tower, where people gather for drinks, music, and a laid-back vibe.
